"Is a kiss between friends ever 'just a kiss' " ?
In this brilliant short film called "El Beso", Daniel asks his best friend Ale to test his kissing skills as he prepares for a date with Ana. I really enjoyed the way the 12 min film captures the laughter, the tension and the unspoken words of an important moment. At the end of it, you are left questioning the connection that now exists between the two long-time friends.
I have had the best experiences getting feedback from those who have seen my painting "Despedida" (Farewell in English), a rather complicated kiss, exhibited in NY at the Wilmer Jenning Gallery. Since then, I have been inspired to hear more and more about what a kiss, powerful intimate moment between two human beings, means in different situations.
In Port-au-Prince, some people who have seen Despedida during the first outbreak of tensions between Haiti and the Dominican Republic, have associated it with the conflict between the two countries. In the U.S. in similar political climate, some have associated it with the racial tension between Black and White Americans... And universally... many have read this painting for the complex human connections it portrays.
"Despedida" is now part of the collection of NYC based poet Nichole Acosta. Nichole wrote a poem about this painting which she cleverly titled "Colorblindness". Find below the image.
COLORBLINDNESS - Nichole Acosta - NYC 2015: When we close our eyes | there is only now | there is only here | there is only us. I don't tell you you're not blue enough | you don't tell me I'm not red enough | we are enough.
